Tim Walz: From Mankato Teacher to VP Candidate

Former Students and Colleagues Share Memories of Democratic Candidate

When Tim Walz announced his bid for vice president on the Democratic ticket in 2024, his former students and colleagues from Mankato West High School were not surprised.

A Natural Leader

“He was always a natural leader,” said Jacob Reitan, a former student of Walz's. “He was the kind of teacher who could motivate you to do your best, even when you didn't think you could.”

Walz's leadership skills were evident both in the classroom and on the football field, where he served as an assistant coach.

  • According to Amanda Hinkle, another former student, Walz taught by example.
  • He was always willing to go the extra mile to help his students succeed.

A Commitment to Public Service

After teaching for 12 years, Walz entered the world of politics.

He served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2006 to 2014, before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2018.

Walz's former colleagues believe that his experience in public service has prepared him well for the role of vice president.

  • “He's a man of integrity who is always willing to put the needs of others before his own,” said Gwen Walz, his wife.
  • “He has the experience and the temperament to be a great vice president.”

A Bright Future

If elected, Walz would be the first vice president from Minnesota since Hubert Humphrey in 1965.

His supporters believe that he would bring a wealth of experience and leadership to the White House.

“He's a man of the people,” said Reitan. “He understands the challenges that everyday Americans face. I think he would be a great vice president.”
