A TV Icon Passes

James Barrie Sikking, best known for his roles as a tough police lieutenant in the TV show "Hill Street Blues" and as the titular character's kindhearted father in "Doogie Howser, M.D.," has passed away at the age of 90. The actor died peacefully at his home in Ashland, Oregon, on July 16, 2023.

A Life in Television

Born in Los Angeles, California, on March 5, 1934, Sikking began his acting career in the 1960s, appearing in guest roles on various television shows. His breakout role came in 1981 when he was cast as Sergeant Howard Hunter in the critically acclaimed police drama "Hill Street Blues." Sikking's portrayal of the gruff but compassionate Hunter earned him an Emmy Award nomination in 1983.

After "Hill Street Blues" ended in 1987, Sikking continued to work steadily in television, appearing in shows such as "L.A. Law," "NYPD Blue," and "Murder, She Wrote." He also starred in the short-lived series "Doogie Howser, M.D." from 1989 to 1993.
